I think there are two types of locks in this world.
- Locks that protect something precious behind them.
- Locks that protect you from something dangerous behind them.
Type 1 locks are the kind banks put on safes and vaults, and you put on your home to keep out robbers and thieves.
Type 2 locks are the kind zoos put on the door leading into the lion enclosure, or the government puts on a fence surrounding a military shooting range.
Plucky is a kind of lock. Once put in place, it stops you from accessing the kind of content that’s outside the bounds of what your configuration allows.
The question is: what type of lock is Plucky to you?
If you subconsciously (or consciously) think of Plucky as the first type – that Plucky is locking away the precious goods you want to lay your eyes upon – then it’s pretty natural that you’d want to break that lock.
If you think about it, doesn’t the very existence of a lock actually make the thief want to break it? Doesn’t it make the thief covet the precious goods inside the safe more, which causes his greed to grow? In the same way, if you view Plucky as a Type 1 lock, it will make your lust grow.
But if you view Plucky as a Type 2 lock, it means recognizing the lock is there for your own good. Just as a ferocious pride of lions or a live shooting range poses terrifying danger to your body, so too does pornography pose a terrifying danger to your soul.
Next time you feel tempted to break the lock, remind yourself what kind of lock it is.
